Acer Iconia Review – The Next Generation Laptop
Text by Richie Setiawan
Acer has managed to boost the sales of its notebook PCs for the past few years. The company has even tried offering their loyal customers with more features and improvements with every notebook PC the manufacturer has been releasing recently. Today, Acer’s loyal customers will even have a whole new better experience thanks to the Acer Iconia, the next generation notebook PC or laptop.
Acer releases the Iconia in response to the Libretto W105 from Toshiba and Asus’ recently announced dual panel touch screen PC. The first thing that will catch the eyes of most PC users at their first glance at the Acer Iconia is most likely to be the dual screens featuring full touch interface for the users to explore and enjoy. Thanks to these dual touch screens, PC users will be viewing their photos, multimedia contents and browsing web pages like never before. In addition to that, the dual screens offer seamless access between each other. This makes it possible for the users to enjoy watching their favorite movies on one screen while doing their work on another screen. In other words, it’s like having 2 computers on 1 laptop.
The virtual keyboard is the next new element offered by the Acer Iconia. This next generation laptop does not have a physical keyboard anymore. However, users can simply put both of their hands on the bottom screen. Then, a virtual keyboard featuring a full QWERTY layout will appear before their eyes in an instant. Better yet, the virtual keyboard also supports international language input as well as a predictive text input system. Besides the keyboard, there is also a virtual touchpad right under it.
Acer understands that easy access to menus and installed applications is an important feature to implement. This is why Acer has implemented a feature called the Acer Ring into the Iconia. All the users need to do is activate the Acer Ring and a circular list of features and applications will show up. In order to activate this particular ring, users only need to place 5 of their fingers facing the Iconia’s touch screen and make a grab gesture. Then, they can scroll easily and without hassles through the listed features and applications.
In order to maximize the touch screen capability of Acer Iconia, a gesture editor has also been built into the laptop. This allows the users to scratch their own personalized gestures that they can use to browse their favorite web pages or to run their favorite applications among other things to mention.
Social life plays a key role in people’s life today and Acer understands this, too. The Acer Iconia comes with a feature Acer calls the SocialJogger. This keeps the users updated with the accounts they have on Flickr®, Youtube® and Facebook® on the top screen. The second screen, on the other hand, gives the users the ability to view and explore even more contents.
Acer also introduces clear.fi technology with the Iconia touch screen laptop – or touchbook to be more proper. This is Acer’s approach to flexible media sharing system. Taking advantage of the cloud computing system, clear.fi enables Acer Iconia to communicate and share media files with multiple devices running multiple platforms from anywhere in the world. The only requirement that exists is that all those devices should have supported the clear.fi technology.
Last but not least, specifications determine everything a laptop can or cannot do so here are the specs. Acer Iconia is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor – the options include 480M, 560M and 580M, 4GB DDR3, Intel HD integrated graphics with 128MB of RAM, a couple of multi-touch screens measuring 14 inches with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels each, a hard drive – options include 320, 500, 640 and 750GB, built-in speakers and microphone, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi connectivity, built-in 3G WWAN, 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a battery with 4 cells. Acer provides one-year warranty for the Iconia.
