How to Speed Up Windows 7
Text by Richie Setiawan

Windows is one of the world’s most favorite operating systems in existence to date. Most versions of Windows are easy as well as practical to use. In addition to that, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) is also quite appealing to the eyes, not to mention how fantastic it can turn out with high end graphic cards. Unfortunately, in spite of all that, all Windows versions tend to have one problem in common, which is, they become pretty slow over time. Therefore, most users will always be looking for some ways in order to speed up the Windows OS installed on their PC. In this case, the version of Windows to be discussed is Windows 7, the latest installment to the series. However, the techniques described in this article often apply to other Windows versions as well.

To start it off, the first thing that PC users can do is to check how much hard drive space they have remaining. In case they only have about 10 to 20 percent of total hard drive space remaining, it is recommended that they uninstall some applications. One thing that most PC users tend to forget about applications is that sometimes they may have installed one or more applications that they may not even need at all. To uninstall these unnecessary applications, users can use the “Uninstall a Program” feature accessible through Start --> Control Panel. Or, to make it simple, users can simply click on their Start button and type appwiz.cpl.

The next step in speeding up Windows 7 is to perform a disk cleanup operation. This can be carried out by clicking Start followed by All Programs, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Cleanup. A small window will then pop up and check if any files that are safe to delete exist. When it has finished checking, another window will pop up listing all files that can be deleted without causing any harm to the system.

Another very effective technique to make the operating system run faster is to modify the programs and services that Windows launches on startup. To do this, users need to access System Configuration utility by clicking Start and typing msconfig. On the Startup section, users can check for programs that they may not really need at all times and can be disabled safely. Then, on the Services section, they can also disable services which they do not always need. One rule of thumb, however, is to leave the services manufactured by Microsoft intact unless the users know for sure what the services are for and whether or not it is safe to turn them off.

After users are done with the System Configuration utility, they can proceed to the Services utility. This can be launched by clicking on the Start button and typing services.msc in the search box. On the right hand pane of this window, users will find 2 sections if they use the extended – which is more preferable – instead of the standard view. The right section enlists all services available on their system while the left section explains what each service is for when users click on any of them. Reading the explanation, users will commonly be able to determine if it is safe for them to deactivate a certain service.

Users can also set their system not to keep track of recently opened documents to help make their computer faster. If they right click on the Start button and click Properties, they will be able to see a check box next to the option of storing and displaying recently opened programs in the Start menu. All they need to do is simply to clear the check box.

One last step that is also very important to speed up the system is to clean the system registry. Fortunately, this can be done automatically by means of third party registry cleaning applications that are available massively throughout the internet these days. Or, for the advanced users who prefer to do this by themselves, they can use the Registry Editor accessible by typing regedit in the Start menu search box.
