Floods Hit Jakarta – Tree Collapsed, 12 Cars Wrecked
Text by Richie Setiawan
On Wednesday, 16th March 2011, Indonesia was once again hit by heavy floods. Flood could be seen along Jl. Letjend. S. Parman in Grogol in the western district of Jakarta. The flood reached a height of 40 cm. Due to this pretty heavy flood, miles and miles of cars were jammed until the evening. Yet, some people managed to earn some money by offering transport services for motorbikes with halted engine due to this particular flood. These people offered their service by means of a cart. This cart only has wheels without motors making it possible to run despite the heavy flood. Due to this flood, it took an hour for a working motorbike to reach a distance of 3 km. Under the normal circumstances, it only takes 10 minutes for a motorbike to reach 3 km.
A heavy flood also hit Kebayoran, another area in Jakarta, on Wednesday afternoon. Besides the heavy flood, a strong wind also hit this area. As a result, a huge tree with a diameter of 2 meters collapsed and wrecked 12 cars, some of which were parking and some others were moving on the road.
As if the disasters in Jakarta were not enough, the residents of the capital city of Indonesia also had to go through a heavy flood and a strong wind that took place at Jl. Asia Afrika. The flood reached a height of 50 cm in this area and the strong wind that hit had caused a huge billboard to collapse upon a garage, a Peugeot and a Toyota. Fortunately, the owner of the wrecked Peugeot just got out of the car when the accident took place and thus his life was saved. However, he claimed to suffer from a loss totaling tens of millions of rupiahs.
