Mazda SHINARI -- Your Soul of Motion
Text by Richie Setiawan
Are you a Mazda fan? If so, then you’ll definitely love the company’s latest invention. Yet, even if you are not, or haven’t turned out to be, a Mazda lover, you’ll soon become one after you have seen the Mazda SHINARI concept car. For those living in North America, they might have grasp the chance of spotting the car some time earlier as it was shown off at the Auto Show in Los Angeles back in the year 2010.
Directed by Ikuo Maeda, the new director for global design at Mazda, SHINARI turns out to be the Japanese manufacturer’s first car to introduce KODO, or, in other words, the “Soul of Motion”. KODO is the new design style that the manufacturer is going to hold onto for the years to come. Mazda tries to follow the success of its NAGARE concept car with the SHINARI. For your information, the NAGARE was first introduced to the public back in the year 2006 and Los Angeles was also the lucky state then to reveal the car in its Auto Show.
The Mazda SHINARI comes as a sports coupe that is capable of accommodating 4 passengers altogether at a time. Yet, even though it is a sports coupe, Mazda has made sure that passengers have easy access into the coupe by giving it 4 doors. That way, the SHINARI also looks very flexible as well as ideal for moving at a high speed. Anyway, this is what the Japanese term “shinari” refers to. The body of the coupe is supple and muscular yet also gives an impression of being filled with tension.
You will surely look very masculine driving one of this coupe. The headlights as well as the taillights are all very masculine. In fact, when in the night, it looks as if this latest invention from the Mazda company is about to strike whoever or whatever vehicle passes by it. In addition to that, the headlights and taillights all take advantage of multi reflector lighting system making sure there is never insufficient illumination.
Furthermore, the Mazda SHINARI sports coupe also comes with a panoramic glass roof that is divided into sections targeted for each of the passengers, including the driver, inside. This gives optimum light for everybody in the coupe.
Featuring 4 leather seats covered in white, the interior of the coupe is pretty luxurious as well as spacious. Furthermore, when you enter the cabin, you will find quite a lot of digital instruments that you can take advantage of. If you are the driver, you will have to learn how to shift using the shift paddles located on the steering wheel if you are not used to it just yet.
In addition to that, one interesting thing about the Mazda SHINARI sports coupe instruments is its hybrid odometer that is comprised of both the analog and the digital dials. In addition to that, there is an integrated GPS in the digital dial inside the RPM indicator. Then, to the right of the center dial, there is a status indicator that displays information about the car status.
The Japanese automaker has also equipped its latest invention with 3 driving modes to use, each at its own benefit. For the executives, Business driving mode may well be the perfect option. For the active and sporty people, in comparison, Sporty seems to be the right choice. For the rest, on the other hand, it seems that the Pleasure driving mode will simply please everybody inside.
However, though, it seems that nothing is perfect and neither is this Mazda SHINARI sports coupe. It is quite unfortunate that the roof is not a retractable roof. Looking at the dimension of the coupe, there should be enough spaces within the trunk to store the roof just in case it is designed to be retractable. But well, it is not a real deal breaker anyway. So, what do you think about your “Soul of Motion”?
