Test Drive Unlimited 2 - Racing Is Not Enough
Text by Richie Setiawan
This year, 2011, Atari, in association with Eden Games, are about to make a cutting-edge innovation in the genre of racing games. They are about to bring players into a world full of real-life simulation making their latest installment in terms of car racing games, the Test Drive Unlimited 2, nearly as lively as life itself. This year, players will realize that racing is not enough anymore. Players have always been expecting a racing game that can come as close to life as possible and here comes TDU2 as an answer from big game companies with the caliber of Atari and Eden Games.
Unlike any other racing games in which what players can do are simply buying, modifying and using a car to race, Test Drive Unlimited 2 has a bunch of other things to explore. Trying to offer players with a real-life experience, Atari and Eden Games are making it possible for the players not only to race but also to interact with other players from the rest of the world.
Within this particular sequel to the original TDU, players will be able to get on and off their car in order to socialize with the TDU2 community within the game. Instead of sitting inside their prestigious car and driving it the whole time during the game, players can walk instead to their destination such as paying a visit to where their friends or rivals live in the game. Also, while driving their car, players can even open and close their car roof -- in case the car has a convertible roof. This is something new compared to other existing car racing games that usually offer this particular feature only before players have begun racing. With this feature, TDU2 becomes even livelier.
As a matter of fact, this is one of the most interesting and unique features the game can offer, the multiplayer mode that is designed to combine seamlessly with the single player offline mode. With this particular mode, Atari and Eden Games claim their game to have the genre of M.O.O.R.® which stands for Massively Open Online Racing. Thanks to it, players are free to choose whether they want to race simply in the single player offline mode or as part of the multiplayer mode. The choice is in their hands since the game is live at all times with automatic content updates. Atari has made videos on this feature available.
Now, the next innovation in the genre of racing games offered for the very first time to players all over the world by Atari along with Eden Games is the possibility of owning something apart from cars. Yes, forget cars for a second. Life is not all about cars after all. In Test Drive Unlimited 2, players will have the possibility to buy their dream house -- as long as they manage to earn enough money in the game, of course. Better yet, for those that cannot live in the same place for too long, they can buy a yacht instead. This way, they can move whenever they feel like doing so.
The better part of this dream house or yacht is that players can even make some modifications to them. With that being said, players will have something else to modify besides their race cars. Players can furnish their house or yacht with some simply affordable yet comfortable furniture or with some latest eye-catching masterpieces in trends. Yet, if those are not enough, the game also offers players with a wide range of apparels to choose from. Lots of these apparels are based on certain cars. So, if a player has a Jaguar XKR, for example, they can choose an apparel that has specifically been designed to accompany the car.
Another interesting thing about Test Drive Unlimited 2 is that when players have made enough cash to buy a new car, they will be going to places that look like car showrooms. This is yet another simulation that very nearly brings the game to life. Unlike any other car racing games that simply unlock new cars when players have scored enough points, TDU2 allows players to visit car showrooms to choose the car of their dream -- or simply the one that suits their budgets. These videos pretty much say it.
Now, last but not least, one thing that is of great importance and interest as well is the location where players will be playing in the game. Test Drive Unlimited 2 gives players the opportunity to feel the sensation of the Ibiza island which is often a favorite holiday resort for most people living in this world. The island is carefully and beautifully simulated so that players won't miss a thing offered by the real-life Ibiza while exploring it within the game.
With all the features and simulations the game is able to offer, it becomes nearly impossible to separate Test Drive Unlimited 2 from the real-life. The game simply has enough, if not massive, simulations of things people can possibly encounter and experience in their life in the real world and it is just what is needed to make players addicted to a car racing game -- even for those that are not normally fond of playing car racing games.
