How to Enable Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 7
Text by Richie Setiawan

Being able to browse the internet is one thing that PC users cannot miss. This is very sensible taking into consideration how crucial internet has become in the everyday life of most people in this world. However, though, some people may have multiple computers, whether at home or at the office, while they only have one internet connection available. With that being said, it becomes very important to be able to share the only internet connection among all the computers. Fortunately, Windows allows its users to do this.Network and Sharing Center

To start it off the easy way, the Windows user whose PC is directly connected to the internet need to click on the network availability icon which is located on the bottom right hand corner by default. A small pop-up menu will then appear. The user will then need to click Open Network and Sharing Center.

Or, for a more detailed version, the user can click on Start and then Control Panel. Inside the Control Panel window, the user will have to click on Network and Internet. Then, on the next window that shows, the user is required to click on Network and Sharing Center.

On the left hand pane of the Network and Sharing Center window, there is a navigation menu that says ‘Change adapter settings’. It is what the user needs to click. On the window that follows, he/she will have to right click on the active internet connection and choose Properties.Internet Connection Sharing Properties

On the Sharing tab on the window that pops up, the user is required to check the box which says ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’. Subsequently, it is necessary to choose where to share the connection. Of course, everything that the user does will not be validated unless he/she clicks on OK.

There is also another way to share the internet connection. However, this is only possible if the computers desired to share the connection are all Wi-Fi-capable. In this case, the user with the direct connection to the internet will have to go to the Network and Sharing Center window again. Then, he/she will need to click ‘Set up a new connection or network’.

On the list that appears, the user should click ‘Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network’. Then, all the user has to do is simply follow the on-screen instructions which include giving a name as well as a password for the connection. In addition to that, he/she will also need to choose which security level is desired.

Then, when the connection is all set, users of other computers simply need to join the network that has just been created by the PC connected directly to the internet. However, needless to say, to make such an ad hoc connection possible, users of all computers must have their Wi-Fi adapter switched on.

The latter option seems to be more interesting since it is more practical without any needs for network or LAN cables. This is particularly useful if there are not too many spaces available. However, this may not reach computers that are located quite far away as Wi-Fi connection has a maximum distance limit. This limit varies based on the protocol used.
